The Bachelor of Arts in International Relations at Ritsumeikan University’s College of International Relations is a four-year undergraduate program designed to equip students with a deep understanding of global politics, society, and cross-cultural dynamics while fostering critical thinking and communication skills necessary to address contemporary international issues. The program is offered primarily in two tracks: the International Relations major, taught in Japanese, and the Global Studies major, taught in English, both of which introduce students to foundational theories, regional studies, international law, global governance, peace and conflict resolution, and related disciplines, with many courses available in both languages to broaden perspectives. Students engage in a structured curriculum that begins with foundational coursework and language development (including English and additional foreign languages), advances into specialized and regional topics, and culminates in independent research projects typically conducted through small-group seminars and a senior thesis, supported by opportunities for internships, study abroad, simulation gaming, and career preparation. The multicultural campus environment—with significant representation of international students and faculty—adds to the global learning experience and prepares graduates for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, public service, global business, and civil society. In addition, Ritsumeikan offers an American University–Ritsumeikan joint degree option where students study two years in Kyoto and two years in Washington D.C. and earn a Bachelor of Arts in Global International Relations jointly awarded by both institutions, further enhancing international exposure and academic depth.
