The Master of Arts in Global Humanities and Social Sciences at Nagasaki University (officially offered through the Graduate School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences) is a research-oriented two-year master’s degree program designed to deepen students’ understanding of global society from an interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences perspective. The curriculum encourages rigorous examination of key concepts, theories, and methodologies across disciplines to critically explore issues of culture, language, politics, policy, society and identity in an interconnected world, fostering skills in critical thinking, analysis and contextual research. Students can tailor their studies through thematic streams that include International Public Policy, which focuses on global policy issues using political science, law, and economics; Social Dynamics, which emphasizes fieldwork and social change across regions; Human and Cultural Studies, which examines cultural foundations and representations; Language and Communication, which engages with linguistic diversity and intercultural communication; and a Dutch Studies component that offers perspectives on European society and global interaction. Throughout the program, learners engage with both theoretical and practical approaches to address complex social and cultural phenomena, culminating in a master’s thesis that contributes to scholarly debates on global issues and multicultural coexistence. The program reflects the School’s commitment to educating graduates capable of contributing to international understanding and cooperation in diverse societal contexts.
