At Doshisha University in Kyoto, the Bachelor’s in Japanese Society and Global Culture is a four-year undergraduate concentration within the B.A. in Liberal Arts program offered by the Institute for the Liberal Arts (ILA), an English-taught liberal arts degree designed for a global student body. The program begins with foundational courses that develop academic and research skills and introduce students to comparative and interdisciplinary thinking, after which students tailor their curriculum by selecting courses across a range of disciplines according to their interests. Students who choose the Japanese Society and Global Culture concentration focus on understanding how societies operate, how cultures form and evolve, and how Japan’s past and present relate to global processes. Coursework explores key questions about community, identity, communication, cultural systems, migration, media, nationhood, inequality, technology, and the symbolic foundations of society, with classes such as Introduction to Japanese History, Japanese Society and Culture, Manga and Anime Studies, Media in Japan, World, Youth, and Pop Culture, and Social Inequalities in Japan illustrating the breadth of topics. Throughout the program, students draw from humanities and social sciences to analyze Japan in global context, develop critical thinking and intercultural skills, and conduct independent research culminating in an honors thesis in their final year. In addition to ILA courses, students may take classes offered in English or Japanese across Doshisha University and have opportunities to study abroad with partner universities, as well as study Japanese language at any level to deepen cultural and linguistic competence.
