The BA in Aesthetics and Art History at Gunma Prefectural Women’s University is a four-year undergraduate program within the Faculty of Literature that offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary study of art, beauty, and cultural expression. This degree combines four key areas of learning — Aesthetics (theoretical and philosophical thinking about art and beauty), Art History (exploring the historical development of art with a focus on both Japanese and Western traditions), Art Practice (hands-on creative skills in painting, design, sculpture, ceramics and more), and Art Management (understanding the relationship between art and society) — all tailored to match individual student interests.
In the early years of the program, students receive a rich liberal arts foundation alongside foreign language education. From the second year onward, they deepen specialized knowledge through lectures and seminars, and by the third and fourth years they work closely with faculty mentors to develop research projects, culminating in a graduation thesis or a creative graduation work based on their chosen focus.
The curriculum also includes fieldwork and community-based art experiences, access to extensive facilities like studios and galleries, and opportunities for studying art in real cultural settings. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, museums and galleries, cultural institutions, arts management, and creative industries, as well as further study in the arts and humanities.
