The emergence of massive datasets containing millions or even billions of observations provides the primary impetus for the field. Such datasets arise, for instance, in large-scale retailing, telecommunications, astronomy, and internet social media.

- Complete a total of 30 points.
- Maintain at least a 2.7 overall GPA.
- Satisfy breadth requirements.
- Take at least 6 points of technical courses at the 6000-level.
- Only up to 3 points of degree can be non-CS/non-track courses.
- Non-CS/non-track courses must be approved by the advisor.
