The department was established in 2002. Affiliated to DSST in the graduate school, the Semiconductor Physics Research Center (SPRC) was recognized in 1990 as one of the thirteen Research Centers of Excellence supported by the then Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). The SPRC has been active in research of semiconductor science and technology and becoming widely known as one of the leading research centers in the world in this field. To be at the forefront of research in semiconductor science and technology, SPRC has been promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers in physics, electrical and electronic engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, and chemical engineering. In order to provide students with a versatile education in the rapidly changing technological environment, an interdisciplinary graduate program was established in 1994 under the same name (DSST). In the undergraduate program of DSST, students learn the basics of semiconductor science and technology, preparing themselves to pursue careers as researchers in a graduate school or research institution, or as an engineer in the semiconductor industry.
