Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), also called Memorial University, is a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to innovation, excellence and creativity in education, scholarship, research and public engagement. It began as Memorial University College (MUC) in the year 1925 as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who sacrificed their lives during World War I. With a community of scholars and students worldwide, including 18,000 plus students from over 100 countries and more than 95,000 alumni across the world, the university is regarded as one of Atlantic Canada's largest universities. Also, it has been ranked amongst the top Canadian comprehensive universities.

Memorial University is home to four main and two satellite campuses. Its main campus is in St. John's and offers several academic programmes in an urban setting. The university's Grenfell campus specializes in environmental and fine arts programmes. Its Marine Institute is considered one of the world's largest marine educational facilities. All the campuses of the university are served by 1,300 plus faculty and 2,400 staff members. The Memorial University of Newfoundland has six faculties that include arts, education, medicine, engineering, business administration and science. It also has six schools, called Nursing, Music, Graduate Studies, Pharmacy, Recreation, Human Kinetics and Social Work. These are known for offering several undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. Moreover, the university provides a broad range of diploma, certificate, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes that are complemented further by large-scale online courses and degrees. At present, Memorial University has 125 exchange programmes in around 40 countries.

Currently, Memorial University has an enrolment of over 19,000 students (including undergraduate and graduate students) engaged in full- and part-time studies. Approximately 85 per cent of the students belong to Newfoundland and Labrador. When it comes to international students, there are 3,400 plus full- and part-time students enrolled at the university. These students hail from 110 plus different countries and comprise 20 per cent of the student population. With 100,000 globally notable alumni, the university boasts of a huge reputation for leadership in teaching, research and public engagement. Some of the remarkable personalities of its alumni network include historian Robert Gellately, British physiologist Mary Constance Cecile Lobban, novelist Wayne Johnston and Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Dale Kirby.
