Established as Grant MacEwan Community College in 1971, MacEwan University is an institution of higher education. In 1988, the college received its authorization to offer university transfer programmes. Later in the year 2009, it became Alberta's 6th university and was publicly renamed as MacEwan University for all marketing and public communication purposes. Offering undergraduate programmes, this is Alberta's largest transfer-in establishment of higher-education.
Nestled in the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta namely Edmonton, the university offers 8 baccalaureates, 2 applied degree and 43 diploma and certificate programmes. The university maintains 4 faculties and 2 schools offering programmes in fields like health and community studies, fine arts and communications, nursing, liberal arts and sciences, business, engineering and physical education. The university offers education to more than 19,000 full- and part-time students. Also, there are more than 12,300 students enrolled in credit programmes. The university manages two campuses, namely City Centre Campus and Alberta College Campus. The former campus is spread across 7 city blocks in downtown Edmonton and is the larger one. The campus offers the majority of university's degree programmes along with numerous certificate and diploma courses in human, services health and business. The administration department of the university is nestled at City Centre Campus. Further, Alberta College offers educational advancement, music and English as Second Language (ESL) programmes and is set a kilometre away from the City Centre Campus.
Other than this, the university motivates program students and promotes their post-secondary education by offering a number of scholarships, awards, and grants. In the academic session of 2015-2016, the Student Awards Offices successfully distributed a fund of $8.4 million, from inner and outer sources to over 6,000 deserving students. Apart from academics, the university boasts of its sports team called Griffins. Students of the university can participate in a number of sports like volleyball, hockey, soccer, curling, basketball, cross-country and golf.
There are two libraries at the university, namely Alberta College Library and John L. Haar Library. The university has proudly produced thousands of alumni who are now working in different areas of society. Some of the known graduates of the university are now leading their area of expertise. Emmett Hartfield (co-founder Intelligence House), Dr James Makokis (Two-Spirit physician), Mark Power (writer, filmmaker, counsellor and the founder of Give of Yourself) and Dr. D. Scharie Tavcer (associate professor at Mount Royal University) are some of the celebrated university alumni
