Yale University is a private, independent research institution founded in 1701 as a Collegiate school to educate students both in church and civil state. It receives over 35,000 applications annually but admits merely 6% of them for further studies at the university. This reflects the low acceptance rate of the institute and the fact that it is highly selective while offering admissions and expects only the cream of the crop as its students. Having been a proud parent to 5 US Presidents and 62 Nobel Laureates among other brilliant alumni to its credit, the institute currently is a coveted choice among aspirants across the globe seeking to study in the USA with an international population of around 11%. It provides nearly 85 majors and over 2,000 diverse courses for its candidates at both undergraduate and graduate level.

Yale University financial aid is available to international students at all levels of study. However, incoming undergraduate students at Yale receive better funding opportunities in comparison to postgraduate students.
Yale University Scholarships for Undergraduate Students
The institution’s need-based aid for domestic and international students is covered by a single program- Yale Scholarships. This financial aid program comprises of two part:
- Non-refundable grant awarded by the university
- Student Effort (part-time work, summer internships, etc.)
- The average undergraduate scholarship at Yale was USD 51,500, which covered the tuition fees. Students had to cover the remaining amount of approximately USD 12,500 (via student effort).
Under the undergraduate Yale University scholarships, 99% incoming students whose family income is less than USD 65,000 were financed. The families didn’t have to contribute any funds for their child’s education at Yale. From tuition fees to books & supplies to room & board, all expenses were covered.
The median scholarship grant awarded to Class of 2023, based on the family annual income, are tabulated below:

Yale University Scholarships for Graduate Students
Yale scholarships and financial aid for graduate program students vary for all Yale University schools. There are also faculties which do not offer any scholarships. For instance, Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences does not offer any internal scholarships to incoming students. However, students are entitled to various stipends, fellowships, and assistantships.
Yale University scholarships and financial aid for a few other schools are discussed below:
- School of Management: The school offers merit-based and admission-based scholarships for programs like Masters in Global Business and Society and Master of Advanced Management. But, there are no Yale University scholarships for MBA programs.
- School of Law: Annually, more than 65 % of incoming students receive Law school Yale Scholarships, awarded wholly on the basis of financial need. The maximum scholarship grant offered to a student is the tuition fees, approximately USD 43,000.
- School of Architecture: The school offers two types of Yale scholarships- Individual-Resource Scholarship and Family Resource Scholarship. To apply for the Architectural program scholarships, students need to complete an online application form.
- School of Medicine: Majority of School of Medicine scholarships are awarded based on financial requirements. These internal Yale University scholarships are offered in partnership with endowment funds.
- School of Arts: The school solely offers need-based scholarships which largely cover tuition fees for a year. A separate scholarship application must be completed before March 1.
Unlike the undergraduate scholarships at Yale, there is no set financial aid grant for postgraduate students. However, the general application process for graduate Yale scholarships is similar to UG scholarships and includes the completion of CSS profile AND International Certification of Finances.
As it can be seen, Yale University scholarships are more beneficial for undergraduate students as compared to graduate students. Nonetheless, international students can still pursue their chosen graduate program at Yale with various external scholarship opportunities.
