Established in 1964, Australia’s Macquarie University is a public research university that aims to provide its students with necessary building blocks to set their dreams in motion. Currently, ranking in the top 1% of universities across the world (QS Ranking 2021), Macquarie has managed to make its mark as a leading university with 150+ MQ courses available to 40,000+ students annually.
In terms of its program structure and available degrees, Macquarie is different and flexible than other universities in Australia. Along with bachelor and programs, Macquarie University offers double degree programs and 1-year master's programs. Thus allowing students to complete their education early.
As a world-leading research university, has maintained a 5-star rating at ERA (Excellence in Research Australia). Presently, Macquarie’s 21 areas of research are rated as outstanding and well above the world standard. Result of this being, in 2019, the university witnessed 2120 higher degree research enrollments. Macquarie University aims to support each student’s learning process by ensuring that they don’t have to look for accommodation outside the campus space. With a wide range of Macquarie University housing facilities, students are offered a place to connect with peers and receive guidance from seniors.
Annually, around 10,000 international students receive an acceptance letter for Macquarie University accommodation facilities. Though each residential facility has its own setup and annual charges, the basic amenities bed, wardrobe, parking facilities, etc remain the same for all.

Annually, its Career Accelerator Program encourages high-achieving students to spend a week visiting the partner industries and cultivate employability skills. They are recommended to participate in workshops to build professional networks.
In October, Macquarie Career and Employment Service launched ‘CV360’, an online tool to instantly receive tailored feedback on improving resume. As specified in the last column of the above table, applicants will have to submit an additional scholarship application form for several program. While the deadlines for the scholarship application may vary, the application process is uniform for all:
- Step I: Complete your Macquarie University admission application and obtain the Student Number.
- Step II: Explore relevant Macquarie University scholarships. Verify eligibility, documents, and note Scholarship Name. For example, the name for Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship- FIRST is “FIRST”.
- Step III: Complete the scholarship application form.
- Step IV: Submit the necessary supporting documents such as LOR, Personal essay, etc.
It is essential for applicants to submit their completed scholarship application before the deadline (varies for scholarships) as incomplete applications will be automatically rejected.
Macquarie University Scholarships for Research Programs
Of the total funding budget for scholarships and grants, Macquarie offers approximately 35% to the incoming and continuing research program students. The majority of the recipients are supported under scholarships designed as a combination of internal and external sources.
Two of the biggest Macquarie University scholarships for international research students are:
- Macquarie Research Scholarship: International students applying for HDR programs at the university are eligible for Macquarie University scholarships.
- Benefits: Tuition fee waiver and an annual stipend of AUD 28,092 (2020 rate).
- Applicants of Research Training Program(iRTP) and Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship (iMQRES) are covered under this scholarship.
- Applicants must have an IELTS score of 7.0 or equivalent TOEFL score.
- Australian Award Scholarships: Students belonging to countries outside Australia and New Zealand are considered for these scholarships.
- Benefits: Tuition fees, travel expenses, accommodation, Student Health Insurance, visa expenses.
- Proficiency in the English language, minimum TOEFL- iBT score of 78 or equivalent IELTS score.
- Evidence that the potential supervisor has offered in-principle support to the research topic.
In addition to research programs, Australian Award Scholarships are also available for international undergraduate and postgraduate degree program students.
