Accomodation

We have a range of accommodation options available including en-suites, studio flats, family accommodation, and townhouses - all located on campus within easy walking distance of laundry facilities, the Porters’ Lodge, social and study spaces, shops, bars, and cafes.

You can browse our range of accommodation options via the accommodation website. Your University rent fees include all bills (heating, lighting and electricity), internet access, plus 24-hour security during term time and general maintenance of the room.

If you are living on campus, it is important that you familiarise yourself with the Residents' Handbook - this includes (but is not limited to) useful information for living successfully in communal spaces, and tells you what you can and cannot bring into the accommodation.

Living off-campus

You may decide you want to live off-campus – and that’s absolutely fine. Chancellor’s Wharf is the only University-managed hall of residence in the city centre and it’s available to students of all colleges. Situated on the banks of the Lancaster Canal it’s just a few minutes walk from the shops, pubs and frequent buses to campus.

We can also support you in finding properties to rent in the private sector with Lancaster University Homes. The LU Homes website contains lots of useful advice on how to make your decision, as well as a searchable list of University-approved properties.

Food Deliveries

You can have groceries delivered to you from most major supermarkets - direct to your front door if you are living off campus, or to various points near the accommodation if you live on campus (speak to your college porter for details on the pickup points). If you are self-isolating or quarantining, please speak to a member of the college team to ensure you can receive your delivery safely.

Many local companies will deliver as well, and we would always encourage you to support local businesses wherever you travel. For those days when you would prefer not to cook, there are many bars and cafes on campus and around the city centre. Visit Lancaster: Shopping.

You’re never alone

Whether you choose to live on-campus or off-campus, you can still take advantage of all the benefits of Graduate College, including trips, welfare support and access to study spaces both on-campus and in the City. We always do our very best to take into account the needs of all of our students so you will feel a part of our welcoming, friendly graduate community.

Placement

A placement is a period of professional-level work experience that is, typically 10 to 12 months long and forms part of your overall degree.

Here in LUMS, our degrees with a placement year take four years and you will complete your placement in your third year.

A placement year offers you a perfect opportunity to ‘trial’ both a job and organisation before you make a permanent commitment. It gives you the opportunity to become familiar with a certain kind of company and decide for yourself if this suits your own career goals. It is also important to note that many employers use placement opportunities to recruit into their graduate positions, with 42% of placement students returning to their placement provider after their final year of study.
