The importance of high-quality electric energy has been steadily underscored in the globally intensified competition of the 21st Century. Korea, which lacks energy resources, needs to replace scarce fossil energy with nuclear energy, minimize greenhouse gas emissions and secure its safety, which is a shortcut to enhancing its industrial competitiveness. The Department of Quantum and Nuclear Engineering, established for research and education, aims to contribute to the future high-quality nuclear energy development and respond to the ever-rising demand in the global nuclear market. Sejong University was designated as a ‘Specialty University for Nuclear Power Generation’ by the government in 2011. Accordingly, we offer an industry-tailored education curriculum proposed by companies, which will support our students’ education and company selection in the future. For the sake of multipurpose usage of nuclear energy, our department has selected, as main research topics, the development of reactors with enhanced safety and economy, next generation nuclear power and radiation technology, and small modular reactors. In the pursuit of supporting nuclear power plant exports and producing top-notch engineers, our department has secured excellent faculty members; whose members have not only theoretical knowledge but also vast experience in nuclear research and reactor design. More importantly, we have set up research and education programs to foster talent armed with both intellectual capability and integrity. Our curriculum consists of introductory courses in engineering and core major courses such as nuclear physics, nuclear reactor theory, nuclear dynamics, reactor experiment, nuclear instrumentation, heat transfer system, radiation technology, numerical analysis, and nuclear system design. We also offer various colloquiums and seminars linked with nuclear safety, nuclear power regulation, and energy development history, which are essential as fundamental knowledge for quantum and nuclear engineers.
