Our Mechanical Engineering with Renewables BEng degree aims to develop your knowledge, design, IT, practical and soft skills so you can graduate world ready and become a leader in a broad range of Mechanical Engineering Industries, specialising in the renewables field. The course focuses on developing your mathematics, physics and computational skills so you can design and create new innovative engineering systems, such as creating machines and systems that incorporate sustainability and renewable energy solutions. Learn how to become a problem solver, so you can play a key role in solving global challenges.
The course covers subjects such as:
Computer Aided Design & Additive Manufacturing: Learn how to design products in 3D using computer software and create physical prototypes using 3D printers
Electronic Systems Design: Developing knowledge in creating electronic system to complement your knowledge in mechanical design
Wind & Marine Energy: Exploring sustainable energy generation from wind turbines and marine systems to harness the power of nature
Solar Energy: Learn how to harness the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable electricity.
Hydroelectricity & Electrical Power and the Grid: Understanding the generation of electricity through hydropower and the management of electrical power within the grid system
In every semester in years 1 to 3, you will gain practical experience through hands-on design projects, lab work, and practical workshops. You will also apply what you have learned to engage in industry-led projects through Problem Solving Industrial Visit, presenting solutions back to industry experts.
Increased employability skills
Studying Mechanical Engineering with Renewables at Dundee provides valuable skills for your future career in engineering. You will learn about Project Management, Mechatronics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics & Thermodynamics, which provides you knowledge in how materials behave under various forces, temperature change or how liquids and gases move. This knowledge will help you create high-performance products in a broad range of industries such as:
Automotive, Aerospace
Wind Power, Solar Energy, Hydropower
Design & Manufacturing
Marine Energy, Smart Grids
Healthcare & Biotechnology
Oil & Gas
In your final year, you will undertake a research project related to sustainability and renewable energy. Previous projects have included:
assessing carbon footprints for companies and adapting working practice to meet net zero
exploring green energy such as battery technology and hydrogen for transport
integrating large-scale wind power for both onshore and offshore wind farms
Dundee is the only Scottish university involved as an Associate Partner with CERN, Geneva the world’s largest experiment consisting of the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator. Our students can visit and also take an 11-month placement at CERN as part of their studies.
Passionate teaching
Our academic staff at Dundee are all experts in engineering and their main focus is to support you during your time at Dundee and help you succeed. They have an amazing wealth of knowledge and with our open door policy they are always willing to help you learn and will guide you through your various projects that tackle real industry problems.
Student community
At Dundee, you will join a friendly and supportive community. You can join many of the sports and social activities run by our societies including the DRIVE racing team, where students design, build, and race a single-seat 600cc racing car. Alternatively, you could join the Aeronautical Society, to learn how to design and build an autonomous drone. Both Societies take part in IMechE challenges for Formula Student competition at the Silverstone F1 racing circuit or the Unmanned Aerial System challenge.
