The three research directions of this sub-discipline (technological innovation and global value chain, service innovation and policy, and knowledge innovation and management) are based on technology management or innovation management and develop along two directions: service industry application and knowledge resource perspective theory.
1. Technological Innovation and Global Value Chains: This research area covers both micro-level enterprise technological innovation and transformation and upgrading, as well as industry- and macro-level issues such as technological innovation, technology introduction and diffusion, and global value chain upgrading based on technological innovation. The research utilizes theories and methods from management, economics, and sociology, starting with identifying and solving real-world problems, and through standardized case studies and quantitative analysis, ultimately elevating the research to strategic and policy implications. Current research focuses on two main areas: first, technological innovation management from a stakeholder perspective, innovation in complex product systems, social innovation, and business model innovation; second, the upgrading of Chinese manufacturing enterprises based on the governance of global value chains and even global innovation chains.

Current research areas include: service enterprise R&D organization, service business model innovation, manufacturing servitization transformation, and service innovation policies. The major industry categories involved include knowledge-intensive service industries, producer services, and equipment manufacturing. The research primarily considers the actual context of the interaction between manufacturing and service industries in Zhejiang Province, extracting cutting-edge enterprise practices and conducting theoretical exploration.
3. Knowledge Innovation and Management: This research direction, set against the backdrop of economic globalization, studies how Chinese enterprises can comprehensively utilize knowledge innovation and management to leverage their "latecomer advantage" to achieve leapfrog development and enhance their international competitiveness. A distinctive feature of this research direction is its ability to break through the limitations of existing knowledge innovation and management theories in terms of perspective and methodology. It organically integrates knowledge innovation, management, and intellectual property theories, conducting original and groundbreaking theoretical expansions and empirical tests of mainstream knowledge innovation and management theories from multiple levels, disciplines, and scenarios. Based on in-depth theoretical research and combined with the practices of Chinese enterprises, it proposes targeted and actionable policy recommendations.
