The PhD in Mechanical Engineering prepares students for advanced research and innovation in fundamental and applied areas of mechanical science and engineering. Doctoral candidates build on a solid foundation of continuum mechanics, dynamics, material mechanics and system design and then specialise in areas such as mechanical design and theory, advanced manufacturing and automation, mechatronics, intelligent machinery, energy-efficient systems, robotics and precision engineering, depending on available faculty expertise and research interests. The programme includes rigorous advanced coursework, independent research, laboratory and computational work, and dissertation research under the supervision of experienced faculty, with emphasis on original contributions to knowledge and engineering practice.
