We are proud to be the first department of sociology established in South Korea. Since its inception in 1946, our department has served as a central hub for sociological research and education. Our alumni list of numerous prominent scholars, journalist, business managers, politicians, officials, and intellectual activists vividly attests to the fact SNU sociology has actively led Korean society towards significant intellectual, social as well as economic progress.

Sociology continues to play a role of intellectual pioneer in the new age of rapid globalization and technological innovation. Sociological research and education at SNU have provided an indispensable intellectual leadership in coping with the critical contemporary issues such as globalization and economic integration and informatization.
