The Korean Language Course at Yonsei University is one of the most established and respected Korean language programs in South Korea, offered through the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute (KLI) in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Founded in 1959, Yonsei KLI has taught Korean to students from over 120 countries and offers a variety of year-round programs for foreigners and overseas Koreans.
The core Regular Program runs four semesters a year — Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter — with each semester typically lasting about 10 weeks (around 200 hours), and classes generally held Monday through Friday. Students take a placement test before starting and are placed into Levels 1 through 6 (beginner to advanced), with an Advanced Program available for learners who complete Level 6. The curriculum uses Yonsei’s own textbooks and focuses on balanced skill development in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, moving from basic communication in daily life to higher-level academic and professional Korean.
Classes are offered in morning and afternoon sessions, and the learning environment is highly international, with students from many countries studying together. Cultural experience opportunities — such as Korean cooking classes, hanbok workshops, and other activities — are also part of student life to enhance cultural understanding alongside language learning.
In addition to the Regular Program, Yonsei KLI provides an Evening Program for working professionals, a Summer Special Program, a 3-Week Intensive Program, and tailor-made group programs, so learners can choose formats that suit their goals. The institute can also support students seeking a D-4 language study visa if they enroll in consecutive terms.
NOTE: The university may have additional program-specific eligibility requirements. It is recommended to verify these on the official university website.
