The Master’s in Chemistry, Biology and Marine Science at the University of the Ryukyus (Graduate School of Engineering and Science, Science Course) is a two-year full-time Master of Science program that integrates advanced study and research across the core natural science disciplines of chemistry, biology and marine science, leveraging Okinawa’s subtropical island and marine environment to address fundamental and applied scientific questions. The curriculum is designed to provide broad and deep coverage of traditional fields like physical, organic, analytical, inorganic and geochemistry, ecology, phylogenetics and taxonomy, cell biology, genetics and functional biology, as well as specialized areas such as marine chemistry, fisheries biology, coral reef biology and tropical biology, reflecting the program’s strong emphasis on marine and environmental systems. Students undertake advanced coursework in these subject areas alongside seminars and laboratory research, while participating in supervised research projects tailored to their interests. The master’s program culminates in the preparation and defense of a research thesis that contributes to knowledge in one or more of these interconnected scientific domains. This program is part of the Ryukyu International Marine Program (RIMP), which fosters international research collaboration and field-based study of marine environments and resources, preparing graduates for careers in research, academia, environmental science, marine resource management, and related sectors.
