The Human Geography and Urban-Rural Planning major at Nanjing Normal University is an undergraduate program that examines the spatial patterns of human activity and the planning and development of urban and rural areas. The curriculum integrates human geography—such as population dynamics, economic and cultural geography, regional development, and community studies—with the theory and practice of urban-rural planning, including land use, sustainable development, infrastructure design, and policy analysis. Students learn how social, economic, and environmental factors shape places and influence quality of life, and how to apply planning principles to create functional, equitable, and resilient communities. The program emphasizes both analytical skills and practical tools, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial data analysis, planning methods, and field research, enabling students to assess spatial challenges and design informed solutions. Graduates are prepared for careers in urban and regional planning, community development, environmental planning, GIS and spatial analysis, public policy, and related fields, as well as for advanced study in geography, urban studies, or planning disciplines.
