The Ancient Chinese Literature major at Nanjing Normal University is an undergraduate program that focuses on the study and appreciation of China’s literary heritage from ancient times through the late imperial era. The curriculum strengthens students’ abilities in classical Chinese language and equips them with skills to read, interpret, and critically analyse major works of poetry, prose, drama, and philosophical writing from China’s long literary tradition. Key areas of study include Classical Poetry (古诗), Prose Literature (散文), Historical Writings, and Classical Literary Theory, along with courses on literary history and cultural context. Through close textual study, historical exploration, and critical discussion, students gain deep insight into the artistic, cultural, and intellectual currents that shaped Chinese literary expression over millennia. Emphasis is placed on both scholarly research and aesthetic appreciation, with opportunities for analysis, research projects, and academic communication. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, research, publishing, cultural institutions, heritage work, media, and related fields, as well as for advanced study in Chinese literature, comparative literature, and humanities disciplines.
