The Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature major at Nanjing Normal University is an undergraduate program that focuses on the study of Chinese literature from the late Qing period to the present day, examining the development of literary forms, movements, and cultural thought in modern Chinese history. The curriculum combines courses in modern and contemporary Chinese prose, fiction, poetry, drama, literary theory, and criticism with exploration of the social, historical, and cultural contexts that shaped literary expression in modern China. Students learn to analyse literary texts using critical methods, understand major writers and genres, and explore connections between literature and modern social change, ideology, and cultural identity. Emphasis is placed on both textual interpretation and theoretical engagement, with classroom discussion, research projects, and writing assignments fostering strong analytical, critical, and communication skills. Graduates are well prepared for careers in education, writing and publishing, media and cultural organisations, research, and cultural industries, as well as for advanced study in literature, comparative literature, cultural studies, and related humanities disciplines.
