The Tea Science program at Nanjing Agricultural University is an agricultural science discipline dedicated to the comprehensive study of tea plants (Camellia sinensis), tea cultivation systems, processing technologies, quality evaluation, and tea-related products. It integrates core subjects from plant science, agronomy, food science, chemistry and agricultural engineering to explore the entire tea value chain—from breeding and propagation of tea varieties, to soil and nutrient management, pest and disease control, and sustainable plantation practices, and on to post-harvest processing, flavor chemistry, quality assessment and product innovation. Students gain both strong theoretical foundations and practical experience through laboratory experiments, field studies, and industry internships. Graduates are prepared for careers in tea cultivation and plantation management, tea product development and quality control, agribusiness operations, tea marketing and branding, research and extension services, as well as opportunities in government agencies and international trade related to tea. The program supports growth and innovation within one of China’s most culturally significant and economically important agricultural sectors by training professionals who can enhance tea quality, sustainability and competitiveness in domestic and global markets.
