The Human Geography and Planning in Urban and Rural Areas program at Shanghai Normal University (上海师范大学) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major within the geography sciences that combines human geography with urban and rural planning to train students in understanding and shaping the spatial, social and economic dimensions of cities and rural regions. Established to respond to contemporary needs in national spatial planning and regional development, the program builds on core geographic theories and planning methods to explore how people, places and environments interact across scales, how urbanization and rural transformation occur, and how thoughtful planning contributes to sustainable, equitable development. Students study human and economic geography, urban and rural planning principles, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), land use and spatial analysis, regional development strategies, and planning design and practice, integrating classroom learning with fieldwork, GIS labs and project-based experiences. Graduates are equipped with analytical, design and technical skills to work in urban and regional planning agencies, government departments, consulting firms, environmental and development organizations, or pursue advanced study in geography, planning, or spatial policy fields where they help address challenges in urban growth, rural revitalization and spatial governance.
