Safety Science and Engineering at Nanjing Tech University is an interdisciplinary engineering discipline focused on the prevention, analysis and control of hazards in industrial, environmental and societal systems to protect people, property and the environment. The programme combines fundamentals of engineering, risk assessment, human factors, system design and management science to understand how accidents originate, how risks propagate through complex systems, and how to design effective strategies to mitigate them. Core areas of study include industrial safety technology, fire and explosion prevention, occupational health, hazard identification and control, safety management systems, emergency response planning, and risk modelling and assessment. Students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills through coursework, laboratory exercises, case studies and field investigations, preparing them to analyse hazards, design safer systems, implement safety standards and contribute to regulatory compliance in sectors such as chemical processing, manufacturing, construction, energy, transportation and environmental protection. Graduates are equipped for careers in safety engineering, risk management, compliance, emergency planning and consulting, as well as further research in safety technologies and policy development.
