Archaeology at Henan University is an academic discipline within the School of History and Culture that focuses on the systematic study of past human societies through their material remains, including artifacts, structures, sites and landscapes. The programme combines field archaeology, excavation techniques, artifact analysis, cultural heritage interpretation and archaeological theory to reconstruct past lifeways, social structures, technologies and cultural interactions. Students are trained in surveying and mapping archaeological sites, stratigraphic excavation, classification and conservation of artifacts (such as pottery, tools, inscriptions and architectural remains), as well as in applying scientific methods like radiocarbon dating and geoarchaeological analysis.
The curriculum blends classroom instruction with hands-on fieldwork, lab research and interdisciplinary approaches from history, anthropology, geology and conservation science to build a comprehensive understanding of human history and cultural evolution. Graduates are prepared for careers in cultural heritage management, museum curation, archaeological research, historic preservation, education and public outreach, contributing to the protection, interpretation and appreciation of cultural heritage both in China and internationally.
