The Department of Korean Language and Literature aims to allow students to systematically understand the characteristics of the Korean language by exploring materials and literature that are language related. The department fosters future-oriented and independent thinkers who have a clear acknowledgement about Korea’s status and role in the world today, which is achieved by understanding the emotions, customs, and life philosophes of Koreans, and recognize the excellence of the Korean language and Korean literature. The Department of Korean Language and Literature is comprised of three fields, which include Korean Language, Classical Literature, and Contemporary Literature. The field of Korean Language takes a linguistic approach in order to conduct research, and it further examines the Korean language from ancient to modern times. The field of Classical Literature lets the students analyze literary compositions, which date from ancient times to the Korean enlightenment era, that enable them to comprehensively understand Korean literature. The field of Contemporary Literature provides an understanding of all literature, which dates from the Korean enlightenment era, and it also strives to bring out a sense of creativity in the students. The underlying goal is to create a desire to write and create literature that fits modern standards. Also, the Department of Korean Language and Literature provides academic field trips every semester in order to provide the students with an opportunity to engage in on-site practical learning and develop a stronger sense of belonging with the department.
