The Master of Science in Urban Governance (MUG) at the School of Public Administration and Policy, Renmin University of China is an English‑taught, interdisciplinary graduate program that prepares students to understand and address the complex challenges of urban development and governance in the 21st‑century urban age. With rapid demographic shifts and urban expansion worldwide — particularly in China’s more than 650 cities and 20,000 towns — the program focuses on developing critical analytical skills for examining urban governing practices, policies, and their societal effects. The curriculum blends theories and methods from public policy, urban studies, planning, geography, and sociology, enabling students to evaluate urban policy at local, national, and global scales and to explore innovative governance strategies that align with diverse contexts of urban transformation. As the first English‑medium program of its kind in mainland China, MUG recruits international students and emphasizes comparative perspectives on urban development, equity, inclusivity, and sustainable city‑making, preparing graduates for careers in government, international organizations, research, consulting, and planning practice.
