The Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) is a full-time doctoral research program designed to train students to become independent researchers with deep expertise in fundamental physics and its advanced applications. This program emphasizes both theoretical foundations and experimental competence so that candidates can conduct original research, develop and manage research projects independently, and contribute new scientific knowledge and technological innovations. The doctoral study typically lasts three years full-time (with a possible extension up to six years in special cases) and requires candidates to complete advanced coursework, participate actively in research under the supervision of a faculty advisor, and produce a doctoral dissertation that reflects significant original work and is defended before an academic committee. International students may choose to complete all coursework and research at UESTC or, in some cases, complete coursework at UESTC and conduct dissertation research partly in their home country, provided that at least one year is spent at UESTC and the final defense is held on campus. Candidates are expected to gain a profound understanding of cutting-edge physics research areas; the discipline offers research orientations such as Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Radio Physics, Optics, Plasma Physics, and Quantum Physics and Quantum Information, allowing for deep specialization in both fundamental and interdisciplinary domains. Students are also required to achieve an intermediate level of Chinese language proficiency to support academic engagement and communication. Graduates of the program are well positioned for careers as academic researchers, university faculty, scientists in research institutions, and R&D leaders in physics-related industries, where they can contribute to fundamental science and innovative technological solutions.
