Meiji University was founded in January 1881 as the Meiji Law School by a group of young lawyers barely in their 30's: Tatsuo Kishimoto, Kozo Miyagi, and Misao Yashiro. It was an era characterized by Japan's urgent need to develop as a modern independent nation. The three founded the Meiji Law School in their fervent hope to "foster bright capable youths who would lead a modern civil society in Japan".

Meiji University ranks solidly among the best universities in Japan, currently consisting of 10 undergraduate schools, 12 graduate schools and four professional graduate schools.

In addition to the Surugadai Campus, Meiji University also comprises the Izumi Campus, Ikuta Campus, and the Nakano Campus newly opened in April, 2013.

Dormy Kasai Global House is a dormitory consisting of private rooms and shared facilities and equipment.

Notes

Haneda Airport (HND) is the closest, most convenient airport to Meiji University's main Tokyo campuses (Surugadai, Nakano). A direct Airport Limousine Bus from Haneda to Nakano takes roughly 40 minutes. For the Nakano campus specifically, a taxi/bus is fastest, while city trains connect efficiently from Haneda or Narita (NRT) to the central Surugadai campus.

From Haneda Airport (HND) to Nakano Campus

Bus: Take the Airport Limousine Bus directly from Haneda Airport International Terminal to Nakano Station (approx. 40 min).
Train: Take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa Station, then transfer to the JR Yamanote Line to Shinjuku Station, and finally the JR Chuo-Sobu Line to Nakano Station.

From Haneda Airport (HND) to Surugadai Campus

Train: Take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa Station, then transfer to the JR Yamanote Line or Keihin-Tohoku Line to Tokyo Station or Akihabara Station, then walk or take a short subway ride to Ochanomizu Station.

From Narita Airport (NRT) to Meiji University

Train: Take the Narita Express to Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station (approx. 60–90 min), then transfer to the JR Chuo Line to Ochanomizu Station (for Surugadai) or Nakano Station (for Nakano).

From Haneda Airport (HND) to Ikuta Campus

Train: Take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa Station, then transfer to the JR Yamanote Line to Shinjuku Station, followed by the Odakyu Line to Mukogaoka-Yuen Station.
