Soka University was founded on April 2, 1971, with three faculties and four departments by Daisaku Ikeda, who inherited the ideals of Soka education from his predecessor, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, and his mentor, Josei Toda. It has now grown to include eight faculties, ten departments, six graduate schools, and two professional graduate schools.

Accommodation

In order to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment, Soka University operates dormitories for international students. Priority is given to students who are enrolled in the Bekka Preparatory Japanese Language Program, Undergraduate Non-degree Program, and exchange students who are unable to rent apartments due to their visa status. Administrators and student staff members (including Japanese students) are stationed at the dormitories to provide assistance to and for the security of resident international students.

Soka University’s objective is not only to provide for the optimal learning environment. We hope that students from around the world will prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build lifelong friendships and interact with people from diverse cultures on a daily basis.

※Information regarding the terms and conditions of residence for each of the dormitories is sent directly to exchange and international students accepted into Soka University following their entrance examination results.

Placement

In order to support the job hunting activities of international students, Soka University provides assistance through career-oriented classes and interviews. In particular, students that intend to find employment in Japan are required to have a language proficiency of at least Level N2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, as well as to understand activities unique to Japan. Soka University offers various career-oriented classes and supports international students in allowing them to open up their future on their own.

To get to Soka University in Hachioji, Tokyo, fly into Tokyo Haneda (HND) for closer proximity or Narita (NRT), then take trains (like Keikyu/Monorail from HND or Narita Express/Limousine Bus from NRT) into central Tokyo (e.g., Shinjuku, Tachikawa) and transfer to the JR Chuo Line for Hachioji Station, followed by a local bus to the university, or utilize the special airport pick-up service if you're an approved Soka University student.

Airport Options

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND): Closer to the city, with good connections via Keikyu Railways or Tokyo Monorail to central Tokyo.
Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT): Further out, but well-connected by Narita Express (N'EX) or Limousine Bus to major Tokyo hubs.

General Travel Steps (Independent Traveler)

From Airport to Tokyo:
- From HND: Take the Keikyu Line or Tokyo Monorail towards central Tokyo (e.g., Shinagawa, Hamamatsucho).
- From NRT: Take the Narita Express (N'EX) or a Limousine Bus to major stations like Shinjuku or Tokyo Station.
To Hachioji:
- From stations like Shinjuku, transfer to the JR Chuo Line (Rapid) towards Takao/Otsuki.
- Get off at Hachioji Station.
From Hachioji Station to Soka University:
- Take a local bus (e.g., from bus stop 23 or 24) towards Soka University (Soka Daigaku).
