The Master's in Theatre Studies is an advanced graduate program that focuses on the academic and critical study of theatre, performance, and dramatic arts. The program explores theatre history, dramatic literature, performance theory, cultural studies, dramaturgy, and contemporary theatrical practices from both historical and global perspectives. Students develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills through the examination of theatrical texts, performances, production methods, and the social and cultural roles of theatre. Through scholarly research, seminars, and practical engagement with performance, students gain a comprehensive understanding of theatre as an artistic, cultural, and intellectual discipline. The program prepares graduates for careers in theatre research, dramaturgy, arts administration, cultural organizations, education, criticism, and academic institutions.

Requirements

An applicant should be a (prospective) bachelor’s degree holder or be deemed to have an equivalent educational background according to applicable laws and meet one of the following qualification requirements.

a) An applicant who completed primary, secondary, and tertiary education in foreign countries (equivalent to all of elementary, middle, and high school and undergraduate school) and earned a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university or is expected to earn a degree by February 2026.

(For example, in Japan, individuals who are expected to complete their bachelor's degree by March 2026 can apply.)

※Those who are expected to earn a Bachelor’s degree in July 2026 or later cannot apply for the program.

b) A defector from North Korea or a foreign national whose parents are also foreign nationals are eligible to apply. Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree from a domestic or overseas accredited university or is expected to earn the degree by February 2026.

※ Those with multiple citizenships or no citizenship are not deemed as foreigners.
