The school was founded in Milan in 1935 by the tailor Giulio Marangoni, and became a Scuola Professionale Artistica or "professional art school" in 1942. At first the school trained mainly pattern makers and seamstresses; in the 1970s and 1980s it turned towards fashion design, product development and marketing.

Founded in Milano in 1935 by Giulio Marangoni, master tailor recognized for his creations by the aristocracy all over Italy, Istituto Marangoni is today internationally acknowledged as one of the leading institutes offering Higher Education in the fields of fashion, design and art. For more than eight decades, it has witnessed the flourishing of Italian fashion and the birth of the ready-to-wear segment, accompanying their development and training young talents who would later forge their success. While remaining faithful to its distinctive identity and educational method, with the international expansion of Italian fashion, Istituto Marangoni has extended its network, opening new schools in Firenze, Paris, London, Dubai, Mumbai, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Miami, managing to reconcile entrepreneurial dynamism with academic culture in a constantly expanding network that welcomes over 5, 000 students each year hailing from more than 108 different countries.
With four generations of students from 5 continents, it was the springboard for over 45, 000 luxury professionals, including Franco Moschino, Domenico Dolce, Alessandro Sartori, Paula Cademartori, Gilda Ambrosio, Julie de Libran and Nicola Brognano.
The pillar of Istituto Marangoni unique educational method lies in its Italian identity, a combination of craftsmanship, technique, a well-developed sense of aesthetics, and business acumen. Taught by leading professionals, the majority of whom are Italian, the country’s legacy and traditions are proposed beyond its borders in programmes devised and adapted to satisfy the ever-changing demands of the evolving markets.
Internationalism is indeed another invaluable asset for Istituto Marangoni, offering its students the opportunity to live a global experience.
For many years, Istituto Marangoni has specialized only in Fashion Design, remaining faithful to its original mission. With the success of its distinctive teaching method and the development of the ready-to-wear element, the demand for a wider educational spectrum led in 1998 to the creation of new Fashion Business courses, followed in 2001 by those in Fashion Styling, providing a global, detailed learning in response to the new market situation. It began exploring the neighbouring field of design, another jewel in the crown of Italian creativity, and this led to the opening of a dedicated school in Milano in 2014, offering visual, product and industrial design classes. Art, in all its forms, the quintessential merging of creativity, culture, traditions and innovation, is today incorporated into all the courses offered by Istituto Marangoni in Firenze, while in 2023 a new extension to the field of Perfumes and Fragrances has been added to the didactical offer, to allow students gain an exhaustive knowledge of the lifecycle of luxury-level perfume and cosmetic products, with valuable insights into product development, storytelling and industry-specific brand management strategies.
Istituto Marangoni excellent standards are certified by the official accreditations of the different Validating Bodies, according to different countries, such as the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) which awards in the schools of Milano and Firenze - through AFAM (Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e Coreutica) - both a First Level Academic Diploma (Diploma Accademico di I Livello) and a First Level Master (Master Accademico di I Livello) - equivalent to a Bachelor and a Master Degree; or Regent's University London (UK) which awards students with either a BA (Hons) Degree or a MA Master’s Degree in the schools of London and Paris; while in Dubai (UAE) the school is under accreditation by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) under the UAE Ministry of Education, and in Miami (Florida), Istituto Marangoni is licensed by the Florida Commission of Independent Education (FCIE) and the Florida Department of Education.
