Established in 1951, Cape Breton University is an open research university that comprises three institutions, namely the Xavier Junior College, Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology, and the College of Cape Breton. The university is associated with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, the Association of Atlantic Universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

The University majorly focuses on the field of business, liberal arts, science, technology, education, and health & wellness. The sports affiliations of the university include U Sports and Atlantic University Sport.

Surrounded by pristine natural landscape, vibrant culture, and welcoming communities, Cape Breton University (CBU) is home to nearly 5,500 students from more than 40 countries around the world. The campus houses the Beaton Institute, which is a center for local, regional, national, and global research and strives to promote inquiry through innovative academic and public programming initiatives. The campus also features a central library that has a huge collection of books, journals, research papers, and many novels. As a record, the library consists of about thousands of books. The buildings in the campus area spread over 17,000 square ft. and include workrooms, reading rooms, administrative blocks, and few auditoriums. Moreover, all the events, fests, quizzes, and competitions conducted by the institute are organized within the campus. Students are provided with all the facilities.

Moreover, the university offers a student exchange program that allows students to learn about a different curriculum along with the professionals. The scholarship programs are offered to the students who have a good record of academic performance and co-curricular activities. It is entirely based on their merit.

The university has a list of notable alumni that includes Nolan Crouse (Mayor of St. Alberta), Jason Massie (Soccer player in League player, Ontario), John W. Morgan (Former Mayor of Cape Breton Regional Municipality) and Gerald Sampson (Former Nova Scotia MLA).
