Founded in 1897, Soongsil University in central Seoul was the first modern university to be founded in South Korea.

A private university founded as a school by Christian missionary William M Baird, the university's motto is "Truth and Service" and its mascot is a white horse.

Originally located in Pyongyang, in what is now North Korea, the school was forcibly reduced to a four-year technical school of humanities under Japanese colonialism.

From 1938 until 1954 the university ceased work after closing itself to protest against the enforcement of Shinto shrine worship. When it reopened in 1954, it relocated to South Korea, reaching its present-day Sangdo-dong Campus in 1957 and gaining the name Soongsil University in 1986.

Today, SSU has over 16,000 students, of which nearly 14,000 are undergraduates.

Students must achieve within five-seven per cent of the top scores in the Korean SAT to be accepted within the most competitive majors, which includes business and global commerce.

Soongsil University is known for its strong IT, economics and business majors. The computer science programme is considered one of the best in the country.

There are 10 undergraduate schools and eight special graduate schools, as well as one general graduate school.

Institutes at Soongsil University include the Korean Christian Museum, various educational institutes such as the Soongsil Language Institute, research institutes such as the Institute of Future Technology, the Institute for the Gifted and Talented, the Center for Computer Aided Molecular Design Research, the Institute of Underwater Acoustic Communication and the Soongsil Institute of Christian counsels.

Accommodation

Soongsil Residence Hall opened in March 2010, and was built to promote students' academic achievements by providing them with pleasant living conditions and convenient facilities and to inspire its residents to expand their basic awareness of community living.

Soongsil Residence Hall, which has 2 basement levels and is 12 stories high, provides its services by accommodating the students' needs through various types of rooms such as single, double or quadruple occupancy, and guest houses. Each room works to guarantee the privacy of the residents as much as possible. The residents can also enjoy maximum convenience with several on-site facilities; a gym, a multi-purpose room, a study room, a cafeteria, a convenient store, laundry facilities and an on-site post office. The dormitory is not only introducing a living environment suitable for the ubiquitous era by providing high-speed and wireless internet connections as a standard, but also securing a safe and pleasant living for its residents through a state-of-the-art security system.

Placement

Soongsil University, located in Seoul, South Korea, boasts a strong graduate employment rate that typically tracks above the national average for four-year universities, regularly hovering between 60% and 65%. Placements are particularly high for its pioneering Computer Science, IT, and Software Engineering programs.

Notes

Soongsil University's root trace back to 1897, when Dr. W. M. Baird, an American missionary started teaching from his residence in Pyong Yang and was then given the title of the first university in Korea. Later during the Japanese occupation and Korea lost its sovereignty, Soongsil University made national liberalization its top priority and took the lead in the national independence movement. In 1938, the school even decided to close down in protest against forced worship at Japanese shrines. Even throughout Korea's tumultuous history, Soongsil has always striven to be the first.
