Scholarships
The University of Toronto believes that no student offered admission to bachelors, masters, or doctoral program should be unable to complete the course due to a lack of finances. With the principle based on this thought, domestic and international students are offered various University of Toronto scholarships, fellowship, and grants.
The major portion of the University of Toronto Scholarships is derived from the operating funds of the university and endowments. For 2019-20, the university provided 247M CAD for financial aid, increasing from 239.1M CAD in 2018-2019. Several of the UToronto scholarships are based on academic merit and are awarded at the time of admission to the University of Toronto. These are available for bachelor, masters, and doctoral programs at the university.
Along with the University of Toronto Scholarships, masters and doctoral students are also nominated for scholarships under the Ontario and Canadian government. Some of these include Ontario Graduate Scholarship, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships, etc. But, UToronto Bachelor program students do have to seek financial aid through external programs and donations. For them, the University of Toronto has designed several scholarship programs.
University of Toronto Scholarships for Bachelor Students
For the Bachelors students, the University of Toronto Scholarships are awarded under two categories: Admission Scholarships and In-Course Scholarships. While the in-course scholarships are open to students, irrespective of their nationalities, the same can’t be said for the admission scholarships. These vary for domestic and international students.
Annually, the University of Toronto awards 4,000 admission scholarships to its incoming domestic and international students. This includes the university’s flagship scholarship program for international entrants- Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program. This is the onlyfull-ride scholarship offered by the University of Toronto.
- Eligibility:
- Demonstration of a certain level of originality of thoughts and creativity in high school and community.
- Academically outstanding and active participation in extracurricular activities.
- Demonstration of leadership skills
- Application Process:
- Get nominated by the present high school for the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship.
- Complete the admission application and then complete the scholarship application.
Around 38 Lester B. Pearson scholars are selected every year and are awarded funds that cover their tuition, book, travel, and cost of living in Canada. By 2020, the university plans to support about 150 Pearson Scholars through the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship, covering tuition fees and living expenses for four years.
Aside from this scholarship program, there are other University of Toronto Scholarships available for all Indian students enrolling in a bachelor's program. A few of those are tabulated below:

University of Toronto Scholarships for Masters and Doctoral Students
UToronto Masters and Doctoral program students entering the university are expected to have a solid financial plan. Even though graduate international students are applying to the University of Toronto Scholarships, the admission-based scholarships are comparatively less.
As an incoming graduate student, international students are majorly offered financial aid awarded by the University of Toronto, donors, Ontario and Canadian Government, such as Ontario Graduate Fellowship, Ontario Trillium Scholarship, etc.
Some of the University of Toronto Scholarships available for Indian students, at the time of admission are:

The provision of a research stipend is also available at the University of Toronto. The research stipend offered to students enrolled in research master’s or Ph.D. programs at the University of Toronto is offered by the respective faculty of the university. The funding may cover one year of master’s study at the university and four-five years of the doctoral study.
External Scholarships Available for UToronto Students
Apart from the University of Toronto Scholarships, as mentioned earlier, international students can opt for scholarships offered by the Foundations and Canadian Government. Scholarships and fellowships which offer the students with substantial funding are:
- Ontario Graduate Scholarship
- Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Ontario Graduate Fellowship
- Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships
- Ontario Trillium Scholarship
The eligibility criteria, application process, and selection criteria vary for each one of these scholarship programs. Applicants planning to apply for these scholarships are advised to verify the same.
To make it easier for its students, especially international students planning to study on a Canada student visa, the University of Toronto has a new centralized award system called The Award Explorer. It is a searchable database for admission, in-course and graduating awards available for its students making it easier to explore various student aid awards.
