Kobe University was founded in 1902 as Kobe Higher Commercial School. The school was renamed Kobe University of Commerce in 1929 and Kobe University of Economics in 1944, before becoming Kobe University in 1949 with the merger of Hyogo Normal School, Hyogo Junior Normal School, Kobe Technical College, Himeji High School, and Kobe University of Economics under the new post-war educational system.

The university is one of only two in Japan with an undergraduate faculty of oceanography. Today, the university comprises 11 undergraduate faculties and 15 graduate schools.

Accommodation

The Kobe University International Residence, located on Port Island, was built in March 1981 as a residence hall for international students and researchers. In March 1986, a new annex was built. In March 2014, both buildings were totally renovated. The five-story reinforced concrete facility has 109 single rooms, 8 married couple rooms, and 4 family rooms. All rooms have unit bath, toilet, mini kitchen and air-conditioner.

Notes

To get to Kobe University (located in Kobe), fly into Kansai International Airport (KIX) as it's the main international gateway, then take the train (like JR Haruka Express to Shin-Osaka, then a local train/Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe/Kobe) or a limousine bus directly to Kobe's Sannomiya area, a central hub for accessing the university. Kobe Airport (UKB) handles domestic flights, while Osaka Itami (ITM) is another option, especially for domestic/regional flights, with direct buses to Kobe.

From Kansai International Airport (KIX):

Train (Recommended for speed/convenience):
- Take the JR Haruka Express directly from KIX to Shin-Osaka Station (about 42 mins).
- From Shin-Osaka, transfer to the JR Tokaido/Sanyo Line for a short ride to Kobe Station or Sannomiya Station (the main hub).
Limousine Bus:
- Direct buses run from KIX to Sannomiya (Kobe's city center) taking about 70-90 minutes.
Kobe Airport (UKB):
- If flying into UKB (domestic), take the Port Liner train to Sannomiya in about 18 minutes.
